Mahler's Concerts by Knud Martner
Knud Martner is a Copenhagen-based authority. He has edited Mahler's and Alma's letters and his contribution to the scholarship on the composer has been celebrated by the International Gustav Mahler Society in Vienna, which awarded its gold medal for his work. Rather than reinterpreting the compositions themselves, Martner's new book documents the significant contribution Mahler made as an interpreter of his and others music throughout his life. While his work at the Hofoper (now the Staatsoper) in Vienna has been carefully documented, the concert life of Mahler is less well known. Seeing Mahler's career through the prism of this exhaustive collection of flyers, programmes and posters from some 300 plus concerts heard under Mahler's direction (starting in Jihlava and ending in New York), makes the reader realize just how huge his contribution to music was.
